Hurricane Travel Tips
Hurricane Season typically runs from the beginning of June to the end of November each year. Regions affected are the Caribbean, Central America, northern South America, Mexico and the eastern half of the United States.
Travellers considering travel to storm-prone areas during Hurricane Season should carefully weigh the risks versus benefits of their trip before finalizing plans. Check local weather reports and devise an emergency plan just in case.
Questions to ask before you go:
  • Ask the airline about its hurricane policies. Will your ticket be refunded?
  • If you become stranded, how will the airline help you? Can you return early if a storm is forecasted for your region?
  • What are your accommodations hurricane policies? Each owner has a different policy on Owner Direct.
  • What are the city/island/resort's evacuation plans in case of hurricane? Are there hurricane-proof facilities for tourists?
  • What are your options once the storm hits? Check with local tourism offices.

Other tips to help you prepare:

  • Consider optaining travel insurance to cover unexpected expenses in the event of an emergency.
  • Research the region where you will visit and familiarize yourself with the locations of local medical facilities, public transporation, travel agents and other emergency resources.
  • Pack a first aid kit and water treatment purification tablets.
  • Keep extra bottle water and non-perishable food items on hand.
  • Bring a list of local emergency phone numbers for the area and contact numbers for your Embassy or Consulate.
  • Protect your vital travel documents from potential water damage.
  • Pack a portable, hand crank or battery-powered weather radio and flashlight.
  • Leave a detailed itinerary with a friend or family member before leaving.
